Take on an empty stomach

Trying to work out how that little camera works. At some point I ought to read the manual.

…actually it has been quite painless.

  • The typhoid pills I’m not so much needing, but I am considering a switch to a compact camera. Portability, jacket pocket is paramount. What did you choose, and can I afford it?

  • I bought the Canon Powershot G9, mostly because it does RAW and has a decent lens. It’s not the tiniest thing in the world–barely jacketpocketable, depending on the jacket–but it’s pretty flexible.

Goes for about $450. I don’t know the landscape of little cameras very well, to tell the truth. But now that I have this one, I don’t really know how I did without one for so long. I’m learning to use it as a sort of all-singing-all-dancing notebook.

  • Several people have recommended the G9 to me. In fact, I’m replacing my old G2 here, so it would be an interesting lineage jump. But I was looking for something more compact, and hoping not to spend that much, so ended up going with the PowerShot SD 1100 IS (in blue, ooh, how fancy!). On its way now. Lots of good user reports on that one, though it would probably be an insult to a pro like you.

    Thanks,
    ./s

  • Well, if you carry it with you, the pictures it takes are always going to be way better than the ones you miss with whatever ‘pro’ camera you left at home.
